The University of Stirling has been given a grant by Defra to conduct a strategic economic analysis of the ornamental fish trade in the UK.

This unprecedented research will be looking at key aquatic products and determining their volume of sales and value to the trade, including how that value increases through the supply chain.

The type of employment in the trade will also be looked at, along with other key issues for the sector, including animal welfare, the structure of the sector and market opportunities.

The research is being conducted now with financial support from Defra and the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA).

Contact is currently being made with wholesalers, manufacturers and retailers to help accumulate reliable figures about the trade.

If you'd like to contribute, please contact OATA for more details on 08700 434013.
