A new species of loach which was inadvertently given a name already in use for a different species has been renamed.

Vishwanath and Shanta described their new balitorid loach Schistura macrocephalus in 2004, but they were unaware that another taxonomist, Dr Maurice Kottelat, had already used the same name for another Schistura in 2000.

The naming cock-up, called homonymy, resulted in the need to alter the name of the second fish described as it was a primary homonym.

Vishwanath and Shanta have now renamed their loach S. khugae, after the Khuga River, the collection locality for the species.

For more details see the paper: Vishwanath, W and K Shanta (2004) - Schistura khugae, a new replacement name for S. macrocephalus Vishwanath and Shanta 2004 (Teleostei: Balitoridae). Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, Vol. 15. No 4. p330.
