A new species of characid has been described from the south of Brazil.

Casciotta, Almiron and Azpelicueta described the new characin as Astyanax pampa in the journal Revue Suisse de Zoologie (Swisss Revue of Zoology).

The fish, which is a member of the Characidae family, was found in arroyo Las Mostazas, an Atlantic Ocean drainage, and the lower rio Colorado basin in the southernmost part of Brazil.
