A new Laetacara cichlid has been described from central Brazil in the most recent issue of the journal Vertebrate Zoology.

Felipe Ottoni and Wilson Costa name the new cichlid Laetacara araguaiae after the Araguaia River drainage to which this species is apparently endemic.

This species is distinguished from congeners in having fewer dorsal-fin rays. It further differs from congeners by a combination of osteological characters, measurements about the head, and colour pattern.

For more information, see the paper: Ottoni, FP and WJEM Costa (2009) Description of a new species of Laetacara Kullander, 1986 from central Brazil and re-description of Laetacara dorsigera (Heckel, 1840) (Labroidei: Cichlidae: Cichlasomatinae). Vertebrate Zoology 59, pp. 41"48.
