A town in Italy has banned the keeping of goldfish in bowls.

Monza town council has banned bowls, claiming that they give goldfish a "distorted view of reality and suffer because of this", says Sky News.

Monza's council official told Sky: "Also, this type of receptacle generally doesn't have a filter and doesn't allow for oxygenation of the water unlike in rectangular aquariums."

The new laws, which come into effect in two weeks, also ban the sale of artificially coloured chicks.
