Earthquake Koi airlifted to safety

Hundreds of carp in Japan's best known Koi producing region have been airlifted to safety to prevent further losses following the recent earthquake and typhoon that hit the region.

According to IOL, hundreds of Koi were rescued from Niigata today by helicopter, after their pools became inaccessible following the devastating earthquake last month.

IOL claims that Niigata may have lost up to 40% of its Koi already following the disasters that hit the area.

PFK spoke to a number of Koi importers at the recent OATA trade conference who expressed concern for the situation in Japan.

Several delegates from the Koi industry suggested that the earthquake may lead to a global shortage of Japanese Koi this season.
