Staff at the Aquarium of the Lakes managed to save an embryonic dogfish from death after its egg case split open.

Displays Supervisor Jonathan Turner told ITV "We're not sure how the egg was broken but it may have been damaged by one of the other shark species in the display before we had time to transfer it to our nursery tanks.

"When we saw the extent of the damage it was obvious that we would have to find an alternative.

"There were some new petri dishes in quarantine and I decided to gently transfer it into one of those.

"Although the shark's egg-case was broken we were able to salvage the egg-sac which it feeds off until it is born.

"Now we just have to keep monitoring its progress and hope for the best."
