Practical Fishkeeping Diploma - Take the test

Have you read all of the modules, and revised as much as possible? Then you're probably ready to take the test to gain your Practical Fishkeeping Aquarist Diploma.

We’re now at the end of coursework for the Practical Fishkeeping Diploma, and it is time to put what you’ve learnt into action.

Over the last five weeks, you’ve explored the fundamentals of aquarium care, from the simplest subjects like where to site a tank, to advanced topics like organ function and industry recommended guidelines for water quality. Some of these things you would have already known, but I hope there was enough new information, or information you might have forgotten over the years, to keep your interest piqued.

It’s unlikely that you’ll ever have to call upon everything you’ve learnt, but it is helpful to have it within your knowledge base. Education is like a tool kit, and while some tools may never leave the box they’re kept in, they provide peace of mind that they are there should they be required.

The Practical Fishkeeping Diploma is an ‘open book’ examination, which is to say that you’re not in strict examination hall conditions. If you’ve made notes throughout, keep them to hand for reference. Should you need to open another tab to look back over something in the course material, then so be it. If you find a question that really taxes you, make a note of it — this is something you should look into more even when the exam is complete, to crystallise it in your mind.

Remember that this diploma isn’t a formal qualification — unlike diplomas from colleges and universities, it isn’t validated by an educating body. But it does provide a great starting base should you wish to continue studying aquatics through one of the formal bodies like OATA. It could also be the certificate you need to stand head and shoulders above other hopefuls applying for a first-time job in the aquarium industry.

So here it is. Sit back, don’t panic, get stuck in… and good luck!
