Are black eyes an indication that your goldfish is visually impaired? Paul Green explains.
It is not uncommon to see black eyes in calico fish and more often than not you find one black and one normal eye.
This phenomenon is just a colouration of the eye surround and does not affect the sight of the fish. It is also worth mentioning that a goldfish’s eyes are a good indication of its health and water quality.
If they are cloudy this could be down to a trauma or high ammonia levels and the source of this problem should be identified and corrected immediately.
It is a good idea to do regular water tests to ensure you keep on top of water quality and prevent stressing your fish!
