Air pumps have been a must-have piece of fishkeeping equipment for eons – and for a good reason. Aquatic creatures require a sufficient amount of oxygen in their water. However, ongoing biological and chemical processes constantly use up that oxygen.  

Therefore, aquarists must ensure adequate gas exchange by maximising the surface area between air and water, allowing oxygen to be replenished via diffusion. Although it’s impossible to stretch your tank or pond to increase the surface, you can enlarge the contact area by pumping air into the water and creating bubbles.

This works in two different ways:

  • Some oxygen is exchanged directly between rising bubbles and the water.
  • Surface agitation increases, improving gas exchange between the water and the atmosphere.

More Than Just Aeration

If you are lucky enough to have multiple tanks, or indeed a room dedicated to your hobby, larger air pumps can have many other uses, too. Besides aerating the water, they can:

  • Power air-driven filters (pictured below)
  • Run protein skimmers
  • Create gentle currents to prevent dead spots
  • Produce decorative air curtain effects
  • Operate brine shrimp hatcheries

In many setups, a single powerful air pump can replace several electrical devices. For example, a well-designed air supply system running sponge filters is expandable, safe, and reduces the need for multiple power cables to supply several small internal power filters. My own fish-house runs almost entirely on air.

Aeration In Ponds

So what happens in ponds? At first glance, garden ponds might not seem to need extra aeration. After all: 

  • Aquatic plants produce plenty of oxygen.
  • The occasional breeze blowing through the garden creates surface agitation that aids gas exchange.

This may be enough to maintain a healthy oxygen level in lightly stocked ponds but there is a good reason why koi keepers have huge air pumps in operation. Additional aeration could save the life of many expensive and beautiful fish.

Introducing the FujiMac 80K II

The FujiMac 80K II is marketed as the “world’s best diaphragm air pump” – a bold claim that I wanted to put to the test.

The first thing that struck me after unboxing the pump was its small size. I reviewed several pond air pumps with similar output a few years ago but most of those were monsters (twice the size) when compared to the FujiMac. The company used high-quality rare earth magnets to achieve this significant size reduction. What they didn’t reduce is the performance.

Performance and Power

This pump delivers high output, despite its small footprint. It can churn out 80 litres of air every minute (that’s 4800lph). It does it at an operating pressure of 15kPa, which corresponds to a water depth of 1.5m (5').

To put it into practical numbers, this pump can supply around fifteen 5cm (2") diameter air stone balls or three 25cm (10") diameter disks at a depth of 1.5m (5'). In fish-house terms, the FujiMac 80K II easily coped with the over sixty outlets I have, with plenty of reserve air.

To provide this huge output this pump consumes only 47W of energy, making it economical to operate.

Maintenance and Reliability

Within the air pump there are only a few moving parts – two diaphragms and a floating magnet – so no need for lubricating pistons or other big maintenance tasks. 

Routine care mainly involves cleaning the air filter pad, especially when running in dusty environments. The manufacturer also recommends replacing diaphragms each year to ensure smooth and reliable operation. 

If you forget this routine maintenance and a diaphragm breaks, there is a built-in safety switch that automatically shuts the pump down, preventing internal damage. Once replaced, the pump can be reset and used again.

This pump was designed to withstand challenging environmental conditions (being IP54 – splash-proof). The sturdy aluminium housing provides plenty of protection to the “engine”. This strong shell also acts as a sound barrier making the pump extremely quiet.

It still emits the humming that is typical of diaphragm air pumps but the noise level is lower than what is required in a library! In fact, I can’t even hear if the pump is working in my fish-house – only the popping sound of the air bubbles proves that it’s working.

Price and Verdict

The FujiMac Air pump range sits at the higher end of the market, with prices that reflect this. While these pumps are certainly an investment, you will get a reliable, quality, air pump for your money. Manufactured in Japan, the pump benefits from strict quality control and premium materials. Each unit is rigorously tested before leaving the factory.
