Three new species of South American geophagine cichlids have been described.

The new species, Geophagus abalios, G. dicrozoster and G. winemilleri, were described by Dr Hernan Lopez-Fernandez of the University of Texas and Donald Taphorn of the University of the Llanos in Venezuela, in the journal Zootaxa.

One of the new species, G. winemilleri, which Lopez-Fernandez named in honour of cichlid researcher Kirk Winemiller, was found on a previous expedition to Venezuela, but went unnoticed until Lopez-Fernandez undertook a study of museum specimens.
