A whale became stranded on the beach at Carolyn Bay in Cornwall on Monday, but despite best efforts to save it the injured animal sadly died.
People walking along the beach spotted the 65' female Fin whale late on Monday afternoon. Rescuers were called in an attempt to get it back out to sea, but attempts failed.
Vets from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) said there was no hope of refloating the whale, which was described as "incredibly undernourished". It also had injuries to its head, body and around one eye.
Hundreds of people had gathered to watch the team of people try to get the whale back into the sea and the beach had to be cordoned off to prevent further distress to the animal.
The difficult decision had been taken to put the whale to sleep for humane reasons, but in the end it died naturally.
