An illegally introduced Northern snakehead have been found in waters in Virginia, USA, according to a report from US Newswire.

The 30cm/12" predator was caught by an angler fishing in the Little Hunting Creek, a tributary of the Potomac, near Mount Vernon, who reported it to a biologist with the Fisheries Department.

The Fisheries Department were so concerned of the possible presence of other snakeheads that they used electrofishing equipment to survey the water, but found no further fish.

Earlier this month, a 45cm/18" snakehead was caught in Maryland. The lake in which it was found was also fished, but no further snakeheads were caught. However, the survey did reveal a tilapia - a type of African cichlid.
