Overseas investors are to fund a project designed to boost exports of ornamental fish species from Chennai, India.

According to a report from The Economic Times of India, the project, called JoDi, is a joint venture between a French investor and an Israeli-based consultant from the ornamental fisheries sector.

The Economic Times says that the project, the first of its kind to attract foreign investment, plans to turn Chennai into an "export hub" for ornamental fish species.

It claims that the company behind the project will encourage private investors to set up other breeding centres in the area to help supply the facility, and it will then ship them to the main aquarium fish markets in Europe and the USA.

The project plans to export 5 million fish every month, and is putting up 500,000 Euros (443,773) in investment capital to get the project going.

Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
