Yet another member of the catfish genus Trichomycterus has been described from the waters of South America.

The new species, which was named Trichomycterus pseudosilvinichthys in a paper in the journal Copeia, has been described by Luis Fernandez and Richard Vari.

The catfish was discovered from mid-elevation drainages in the Provincia de La Roja area of northwestern Argentina.

Vari and Fernandez state in the paper than the Trichomycterus genus is probably not monophyletic, further emphasising the need for greater research efforts into these catfishes.

For details on how to identify the fish see the paper: Fernandez, L. and RP Vari (2004) - New species of Trichomycterus from midelevation localities of northwestern Argentina (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae). Copeia: Vol. 2004, No. 4., pp 876-882.
