A new annual killifish has been described from the Brazilian Amazon.
Moema apurinan was collected from the Rio Purus basin in northern Brazil and is a member of the Rivulidae family.
The new species was described by rivuline systematist Wilson Costa, who has described most of the species in the genus.
The Moema genus includes five other species: M. pepotei, piriana, portugali, quiii and staecki.
All are bottom spawners with a long incubation period for their eggs - typically around six months. The species are said to be difficult to keep in the aquarium.
The new species is said to be similar to M. staecki but has longer pectoral fins and a wider basihyal.
