The description of a new species of bagrid catfish from the middle reaches of the Irrawaddy River drainage in Myanmar has been published in the latest issue of the journal Copeia.
Ichthyologists Heok Hee Ng and Maurice Kottelat name the new species Mystus cineraceus, after the ash-like colour of this species (the specific name means pertaining to ashes).
The new species is distinguished from congeners in having a combination of a long-based adipose fin that contacts the base of the last dorsal-fin ray anteriorly and a colour pattern consisting of a uniform brownish-grey body with a diffuse dark midlateral line and a diffuse dark tympanic region.
