A new species of Moenkhausia tetra has been described from Brazil.
The new fish has just been named Moenkhausia pankilopteryx in a paper by Vinicius Bertaco and Paulo Lucinda in the systematics journal Zootaxa and was discovered in the Rio Tocatins drainage in Brazil.
Bertaco and Lucinda say that the new species brings the total number of tetras in Moenkhausia to more than 60.
The new tetra has a dark spot on the caudal peduncle and two humeral spots. The first humeral spot of black and elongated vertically, while the second spot is dark but more diffuse and not visible in all specimens.
Bertaco and Lucinda give the following diagnosis for identifying M. pankilopteryx: "37-41 pored scales in the lateral line; a deep body, 43.3-51.0 % SL; the presence of bony hooks on all fins of mature males; a caudal-peduncle spot; two humeral spots, the first of which is black, larger and vertically elongate, with the second dark and very diffuse (not visible in some specimens); two or three tricuspid or pentacuspid maxillary teeth; and anal-fin rays: ii-iv, 24-27."
