A new species of silurid catfish has been described in the ichthyological systematics journal Zootaxa.
The new fish, Ompok platyrhynchus, is a member of the family Siluridae and was found in the Temburong River system in Brunei Darussalam in northern Borneo.
Ichthyologists Heok Hee Ng and Heok Hui Tan, who described the new species, say that like O. urbaini, O. rhadinurus and O. hypophthalmus, the new fish has 74-80 anal fin rays, rather than the 40-70 you usually see in other South East Asian Ompok.
It differs from urbaini, rhadinurus and hypopthalmus in body and head shape and has a characteristic concavity on the top of the head, as well as more vertebrae.
