A homeowner in Nuneaton, Warwickshire had unexpected guests literally drop in on his house when he found three large goldfish gasping for breath in the back yard.

The fish were scooped up and placed in a bucket of water before the RSPCA was called.

According to animal rescue officer Simon Dix: "How the fish got there is a bit of a mystery. The man who found them did report seeing a heron flying overhead, so perhaps they were dropped after being taken out of someone’s pond. Either that, or they could just have been dumped. Whatever the case, the fish got lucky and survived; the lawn they were found on was damp after recent rain.”

The three fish, christened Splashy, Finny and Sammy, were taken to the RSPCA Animal Centre in Birmingham and rehomed.
