Forget Viagra - villagers in the Kelantan area of Malaysia are reportedly swallowing live mudskippers, which they believe act as a natural aphrodisiac.

According to The Straits Times, residents are swallowing live mudskippers up to 5cm/2" in length, several times a day.

Carpenter Zulkifli Sulong told the paper that he swallows four or five locally collected mudskippers every day to cure flagging libido.

His late father used to swallow live mudskippers and had 16 children.

'My father must have known what he was talking about when he told me that they were good for the libido.

'The thought of swallowing live fish, even if they are just 5cm long, turned me off initially but I gave it a shot and am all the happier for it', he told The Straits Times.

An academic from a Malaysian university is reported to have told the paper that mudskippers were a known aphrodisiac.

Practical Fishkeeping has so far been unable to find any reference to this in peer-reviewed medical journals.

Earlier this year, a similar live fish cure was disputed in the medical literature and found to be a placebo.

As usual, PFK recommends that you do not try this at home.
