A fisherman has died in the Strait of Malacca after he was stung by a ray.

Rashid Arshad (55) and an assistant were fishing off the Muar coast when they caught what is described as a plate-sized ray in their nets.

Rashid was stung on the hand when he touched the fish by accident and was taken to hospital by his brother Kamaruddin later that day, suffering from acute pain and fever.

He died from blood poisoning 34 hours after the ray stung him.

Kamaruddin said that in his 30 years of life as a fisherman, this was the first incident of its kind.
