A graphic video has been released showing the moment surgeons removed a live lungfish from a man's intestines during an operation at a Brazilian hospital.

The video shows the lungfish — estimated to be around 60cm/2ft in length — wriggling around after removal. Hospital staff can be heard laughing and cheering in the background. The unfortunate fish later had to be euthanised.

The patient has since made a formal complaint after the surgery at Hospital Universitario in Londrina was filmed and posted online — where it has since gone viral — without his permission.

The man would not comment on how the lungfish managed to get there in the first place.
