Australian commercial fishermen have caught a rare False catshark, Pseudotriakis microdon, off Queensland, according to a report in The Australian.
The shark was caught 400km east of Mackay on the Queensland coast by fishermen using a new deepwater fishing technique. The species is usually found in water over 200m deep and generally occurs in the northern hemisphere. This fish is only the second caught in Australian waters.
Ichthyologist, Dr Jeff Johnson of the Queensland Museum, who identified the fish told The Australian: "It's the largest male of this species ever recorded at 2.8 metres."
