Safety officials investigating the explosion of a huge aquarium in Shanghai, which injured 15 people, say it was caused by wear through the stress of changing temperatures, along with UV radiation.

You can see footage of the aquarium bursting, along with the wreckage it caused, in the video at the bottom of the page. PFK covered the incident in a report last week.

The 7 x 3m shark tank on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall was only installed two years ago, but the 15cm/6" thick acrylic had apparently become brittle and it fractured on December 18 under the stress of the cold weather, officials say.

One man, who suffered a broken leg in the incident, is still being treated.

"Experts called for detailed industry regulations concerning the aquarium material to prevent such accidents in the future," said Shen Weizhong, deputy director of the Shanghai Work Safety Administration.
