Alton Towers amusement park is set to open a new aquarium next month on the site of an old 3D cinema.
The 4 million development, which will be called Sharkbait Reef, will be situated in the Mutiny Bay part of the park and will open on March 28.
As Alton Towers is part of the Merlin Entertainment group the new aquarium will be part of the Sea Life group of aquariums.
Much like the others in the group, the guests will be able to explore an underwater shipwreck and have ~hands on contact with marine life in a touch pool. However, this aquarium will have a unique pirate theme and staff promise that it will be the best Sealife centre in the UK.
The attraction will display up to 300 species including several species of shark and a 10 metre long walk through acrylic tunnel which will cut through the heart of the aquarium.
Morwenna Angove, sales and marketing director for the park, is quoted saying: "We're confident the attraction will delight our family audience, giving them an underwater adventure with the additional twist created through our exceptional pirate theme."
She then went on to add: "Research indicators show people aren't going abroad as much because of what is going on in the economy, but people will still want to go out with their family. We think we are ideally placed for that."
Fish for the aquarium are currently being held in Weymouth and will be transferred into tanks at Alton Towers two weeks before it is unveiled to the public.
However, it looks like they must be on a tight schedule as the Alton Towers website is currently recruiting for a ~Displays Curator with a high level of expertise in all aspects of creature husbandry and a good knowledge of plant and equipment.
