Just three days after going on display at a public aquarium in Japan, the world’s only captive Great white shark has died.
The shark, an 11.5ft long male, had been caught off the coast of Japan. It was transferred to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium where on Tuesday, it was placed in the 'Sea of Dangerous Sharks' exhibit.
The aquarium heavily publicised the fact that it had the only captive Great white on its news pages. It added that the fish’s biology was little understood and that it hoped to learn from the shark.
The species has a poor record of success in captivity. The Japanese example proved no different — the shark died on Friday, after its condition took a turn for the worse.
