Dr Heok Hee Ng looks at the recently imported tetra Hyphessobrycon frankei.

Scientific name:

Hyphessobrycon frankei (Zarske and Géry 1997).

Origin:

The Ucayali river drainage in Peru.

Size:

To 4.5cm/1.8”.

Diet:

Readily eats all manner of dried, frozen and live food.

Water:

Best kept in very soft, tannin-stained, acidic water. Temperature should ideally be around the 23-27°C/73-81°F band, pH around 3.5-5. It might be possible to gradually acclimatise this species to harder, less acidic water.

Aquarium:

A peaceful tetra suitable for the community tank when kept in a small group. Provide a sand/gravel substrate and a slight current.

Identification:

This is a distinctive species easily recognised by its red adipose and rayed fins, along with its triangular black spot surrounded by whitish streaks at the base of the caudal fin. Other similar species with the black spot in the caudal region, such as H. heliacus, lack the red finnage.

Price:

Expect to pay £2-4 each.
