A pensioner from Thackley, Bradford was heartbroken to discover vandals had destroyed the pond in her back garden overnight.

Doreen Brook (83), woke yesterday to find her fibreglass pond had been pulled from the ground and tipped over and the pond pump broken. One of the goldfish was dead, but luckily the others had managed to survive by huddling together in a small pool of water.

Her son had only bought the goldfish for her a few days ago.

Mrs Brook, who lives in Northlea Avenue, is a keen fishkeeper and also has two aquariums inside her house. She told the Bradford Telegraph and Argus: "I have lived here for 32 years, and nothing’s ever happened like this.

"Why should anybody want to do this? If they threw stones at the window and broke the window, that would have been terrible enough, but why pick on the fish?"

Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to call 101.
