A number of US hotels are offering the option of a goldfish companion to overnight guests.

Amanda Bauman, who works on the front desk of the University Plaza Hotel in Springfield, Missouri, checks out goldfish to the guests as part of her job. She says: "When they find out that they can actually take a fish up to their room they jump on it."

The fish all have names and there's even a little biography on the back of the fish bowls in the hotel lobby. Chip, it seems, comes from Chicago and it a White Sox fan!

And there's no need for guests to worry about feeding or caring for their fishy companions as hotel staff are on-hand to take care of all that. So far there have been no casualties among the hotel goldfish.

The goldfish are particularly popular with children at the hotel and with guests who are travelling alone.

Goldfish can also be requested at the Kimpton Hotel chain in the US, which has introduced  "Guppy Love" into many of its hotels, enabling guests to request a goldfish companion to join them during their stay.
