An eel, thought to have been the oldest in the world, has died in a well in Sweden.

The owner of the well where Åle the eel lived, Tomas Kjellman, bought the house in the town of Brantevik back in 1962 — and the 'house pet' came as part of the deal.

It used to be common practice to drop eels into wells to get rid of flies and other insects before public water systems were developed. This one was reportedly thrown into the well in 1859 by eight-year-old Samuel Nilsson.

Åle, who survived two World Wars, became a bit of a celebrity during his lifetime, featuring in magazines and on TV. He is survived by an eel living in the same well, reported to be 'only' 110.
