Well, it certainly makes a change from teddies and bunnies - and it seems other people think so too. This life-size cuddly version of a Giant isopod was launched by a public aquarium in Japan - and sold out within hours!

If you thought Bathynomus giganteus was anything but cuddly, think again.

The Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium introduced the new plush toy earlier this month, priced at 6090 yen/£40. It posted a message on Twitter to let people know a cuddly isopod was available — and it was re-tweeted thousands of times, leading to all 140 of the toys rapidly selling out, reports Kotaku.

The real Giant isopod lives in the depths of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, some 2140m/7020' below the water surface.

As its name suggests, the Numazu aquarium has a particular interest in deep sea animals and may well be worth a visit if you find yourself in the area. Numazu is located in Shizuoka Prefecture.

The Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium website is in Japanese, but a quick glance reveals that some of the exhibits are fascinating.
