M and R Dogfish

Glasgow-based aquatic retailer M and R Dogfish specialises in all areas of fishkeeping from marines and tropicals through to coldwater fish, plus all of the associated gear you need to run a successful aquarium.

The shop has been around for years and members of the Practical Fishkeeping editorial team can remember seeing advertisements for M and R Dogfish in the fishkeeping magazines of the 1960s and 70s.

However, the staff tell us that the history of the store goes back much further than this. Jim Wilson of M and R Dogfish says: "The shop was actually established back in 1958 by Bert Mellow, a German fishkeeper who had an extensive knowledge of all aspects of fishkeeping, who I worked alongside when I started here in 1975."

Jim says that working as Bert's apprentice proved to be a valuable foundation for his career in aquatics: "Even today I still try to approach fishkeeping with the same methods and techniques that Bert did.

"Bert was famous for being a visionary and he helped to develop and refine many systems and techniques in M and R Dogfish which are now considered modern. When I started in 1975 we were already aware of the necessity of using live rock and of protein skimming.

"When Bert retired, he said to me that if I was a little older I could have taken over the business. He said he felt I should stay on and help manage M and R for the next owner, as he believed at some point in the future I'd get an opportunity to take over myself. Over a quarter of a century later, I feel privileged to own M and R Dogfish, and to carry on in the same spirit as the founder Bert Mellow.

"Please tell us you've seen this web page when you drop in."

M and R Dogfish is not far from the Ibrox stadium at 466 Paisley Road, West Ibrox, Glasgow. The shop was voted by PFK readers as one of the UK's top 40 stores in 2004. As well as being signed up to the PFK Dyed Fish Campaign, M and R Dogfish also believes in a strict policy of not selling fish which are either impossible to keep, or extremely difficult to keep, or that grow to a size which is inappropriate for the aquarist.
