Wharf Aquatics

Wharf Aquatics is well-known to readers of Practical Fishkeeping as it has a very good reputation as one of the country's top specialist stores, having won a number of awards in the annual Readers' Poll. The shop has been going for over 20 years, with more than 10 of those on the current premises.

From humble beginnings, we've grown into a well-established aquatic centre with a reputation for friendly advice from experienced fishkeepers, and an excellent range of both livestock and dry goods, matched by competitive prices.

Wharf is well-known for its oddballs and unusual fish, and has some very knowledgeable staff on the team, many with enviable collections of fish of their own. In fact, the combined years of fishkeeping experience of the staff at Wharf Aquatics is close to 200 years!

Our multi-award winning tropical freshwater section has always been known for its wide variety of popular community tropicals and also many rarer and more unusual fish species. Recently, the tropical room has undergone a complete revamp, with the installation of larger and more numerous tanks – enabling us to stock an even more impressive range of fish!

We stock a wide range of cichlids – our African Rift Lake cichlid section now contains more than 70 tanks! South and Central American cichlids are also well represented, and West African and Lake Victoria cichlids are also stocked. Catfish are also a speciality, with many rarer types often stocked. We always have a good selection of “L-number” plecs available.

We have new deliveries of tropical fish every week, from UK wholesalers, our own imports, and good quality fish from UK hobbyist breeders.

In addition, we have increased the number and variety of aquarium plants stocked in recent years. We have added a third multi-chamber plant tank, giving us two tanks of good quality bunched plants and one of top quality Tropica potted plants. We have also eliminated the all-too-common non-aquatic plants such as Dracaena from our stock. We also stock specialist plant substrates, CO2 equipment, fertilisers and other accessories for the planted tank enthusiast.

Our large dry goods area contains all the equipment and accessories needed for successful fishkeeping, whether you’re a beginner or a multi-tank serious hobbyist! We stock all the top brands including Eheim, Hagen/Fluval, Tetra, Juwel, Interpet, Aquarian, API, Waterlife, Rena, Hydor, Dennerle, Arcadia, Oase, Laguna, Blagdon, Nishikoi, NT Labs, Seachem, Microbe Lift, JMC, King British, Algarde, Hobby and more. Just as importantly, our experienced staff can advise you on the suitability of a particular product for your needs – as well as the things you don’t need!

A separate tank showroom area contains major brand tanks such as Juwel and Fluval, and we also stock smaller kit tanks by Tetra, Arcadia, Hagen Elite, BiOrb and the new Fluval Edge.

The coldwater section includes fancy goldfish as well as good quality koi and other popular pond fish such as goldfish, shubunkins, orfe, rudd, tench, ghost carp, and British native fish when available such as perch and gudgeon. This is backed up by a comprehensive range of dry goods for the pond. We will be happy to advise you on an appropriate pump and filtration system for your pond. If you have a problem with your pond, we will discuss this with you and perform water tests and microscopic analysis for parasites where appropriate – we won’t simply sell you a bottle of chemicals in the hope that it might solve the problem. We also stock a range of preformed ponds and water features, along with flexible liner and underlay from stock.

The large marine section houses two large fish systems, three large invert systems, a cured live rock system and a seahorse system. It's backed up by a large range of marine dry goods, with products from Aquamedic, Deltec, TMC, Salifert, Underworld, Julian Sprung, Seachem, Kent, Arcadia, Cleartides and many more.

The right advice is a key part of a reef keeper’s success, and at Wharf Marine the staff have years of experience to call upon, advice is freely available to the inexperienced and the experienced alike. Water testing is also available, so we can advise on the right livestock for you.

For those hobbyists that also keep reptiles and amphibians, Wharf Aquatics also has an impressive reptile department, with a huge selection of livestock and a comprehensive stock of dry goods.

Our online shop now contains more than a thousand products at competitive prices. The easy-to-use layout, secure online shopping and fast dispatch and delivery times should make your online shopping experience a positive one – and you have the reassurance of knowing that you are dealing with a long-established and well-known aquatic store, so we’ll be here if you need us!

At Wharf Aquatics we believe that the relationship between hobbyists and aquatic shops should be as close as possible. A good aquatic shop can make all the difference to a fishkeeper’s hobby, and likewise, fishkeepers that enjoy their hobby often become customers for life!
