World Of Fishes

World of Fishes in Felbride, East Grinstead, opened in 1984 and has recently changed hands. New owners Daryl Farmer and Paul Curtis, who are both long-term staff members at the shop, say that store has now grown into one of the south's leading independent specialist aquatic outlets.

The small shop front really gives no indication of just how big this shop is until you're inside. Daryl told us:

"Probably the most regular comment heard by the staff at World of Fishes is, 'I was just passing and didn't realise that this was such a big shop from the outside.' Once you come through the doors you just keep going further and further back, past tank after tank of well-stocked and regular changing aquariums."

The range of fish stocked at World of Fishes is quite varied and you'll find a good selection of community fish, as well as some of the rarer tropicals and marines inside. There are over 200 hundreds tanks and vats here, including 20 dedicated to Rift Lake cichlids, 60 for marine fish and a number of others for inverts and Discus.

Daryl tells us that there is a committed team of staff at the shop, who are always on hand to offer fishkeeping advice:

"With five full-time members of staff and a further three part-time weekenders, Paul and I make sure that the shop and its aquariums and livestock are always in the best possible condition. The previous owner, Chris Williams, is also around to help out when required.

"We pride ourselves on the level of customer support and friendly reliable back-up we provide. As well as offering an ever-changing selection of the highest quality livestock, a vast array of equipment and accessories, tanks and cabinets, including standard and made-to-measure models, we also provide private and commercial installation and maintenance services."

The shop's customers rate the place highly. World of Fishes gave us these testimonials: "I just would like to thank the World Of Fishes staff for their friendliness and helpfulness since the purchase of my 150 gallon freshwater tropical tank; they have provided me with everything I needed to maintain a healthy aquarium, were other businesses have let me down." Matt.

"I have always found the staff very helpful and knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions I have. Thank you so much for your politeness, friendliness and help." Jim.

"I find all the staff very helpful and very knowledgeable. Without their advice I would have given up when everything went disastrously wrong! Thanks to all the crew I am now getting to grips with keeping a 40 gallon reef tank." Rob.

The shop also offers free water testing and the full-time staff are all fully-trained in how to use the shop's microscope to help diagnose any customer fish ailments, as well as being able to recommend the appropriate treatment. And, if you work at the weekends, the shop is open late night on Thursdays until 8.00 pm.
