New species - Elacatinus pridisi
A new species of Neon goby has been found around Trindade Island off the coast of Brazil. The new fish, which has been named Elacatinus pridisi by Guimaraes, Gasparini and Rocha, has just been described in the ichthyological systematics journal Zootaxa.
The goby, which is a member of the Elacatinus genus, more commonly known under the old name of Gobiosoma among fishkeepers, is a cleaner fish and removes parasites from fish of all sizes, ranging from sharks to Chromis.
The fish is believed to be a member of the horsti complex since it has a pale stripe which extends from the eye to the base of the caudal fin.
For more details on identifying the new Elacatinus goby see the paper: Guimaraes, RZ., Gasparini, JL and LA Rocha (2004) - A new cleaner goby of the genus Elacatinus (Teleostei: Gobiidae), from Trindade Island, off Brazil. Zootaxa 770: 1-8.
