New species - Brycon gouldingi

A new species of characin has been described from Brazil's Rio Tocatins basin.

Flavio Lima of the Zoological Museum of the University of Sao Paulo has described the new fish Brycon gouldingi in a paper published in the latest issue of the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters.

Unlike other Brycon species, the new one has several narrow, wavy stripes arranged longitudinally on the flanks and the back, as well as dark pectoral and pelvic fins.

The Brycon genus, which contains 41 species, is covered in depth in the paper and there's a full key to the species found in the Tocatins basin.

For more details see: Lima, F. (2004 ) - Brycon gouldingi, a new species of characin from the rio Tocatins drainage, Brazil (Teleostei: Characiniformes: Characidae), with a key to the species in the basin. Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, Vol. 15, No. 3.
