New rosy tetra described from Bolivia

A new species of tetra in the rosy tetra group has been described from northern Bolivia in the most recent issue of the Bulletin of Fish Biology.

Günter Hein named the new tetra Hyphessobrycon pando, after the region (Departamento Pando) where the type locality is situated.

Hyphessobrycon pando is distinguished from congeners in the rosy tetra group in having with 6–8 conical to tricuspid maxillary teeth, conical to tricuspid premaxillary teeth, the dark margin of the anal fin not reaching its posterior base, the black spot on the dorsal fin often rounded medially and separated from the base of the fin at the posterior rays, and the humeral spot surrounded by paler orange spots in the front and back.

The type locality is a blackwater river without any aquatic plants, save for bladderwort (Utricularia). The pH of the water was 5.9 and a conductivity of 15 μS/cm.

For more information, see the paper: Hein, G (2009) Hyphessobrycon pando sp. n., a new rosy tetra from northern Bolivia (Teleostei, Characiformes, Characidae). Bulletin of Fish Biology 10, pp. 1–10.
