FDA will not regulate GM fish
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday released a statement saying that it will not be stopping the sale of transgenic Zebra danios in the USA.The FDA says: "Because tropical aquarium fish are not used for food purposes, they pose no threat to the food supply. There is no evidence that these genetically engineered zebra danio fish pose any more threat to the environment than their unmodified counterparts which have long been widely sold in the United States. In the absence of a clear risk to the public health, the FDA finds no reason to regulate these particular fish."
This could give aquarium shops in any US state, apart from California where they have been banned, the OK to sell GM fish. The fish are already on sale in Chicago.
In the UK, the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) opposes the sale of transgenic fish as pets.
