Help

We've tried to make the site as easy to use as possible. However, there are over 20,000 pages so inevitably some features might be a little hard to find. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve the site please get in touch.

Why have I not received my activation email?
Some Internet service providers, including (but not limited to) AOL, Bigfoot and Supanet, use very fierce spam filtering policies and mistakenly interpret mail sent from websites as spam. You may find that the mail is in your junk mail folder.

Sometimes ISPs may delete our activation email without informing the user as they do not accept email sent from standard web servers. If you have registered using an AOL or Supanet address your details will be forwarded to the Website Editor who will manually forward you the activation email. Please be patient in waiting for a response, as delays are inevitable at weekends and outside normal office hours. If have not received your details, or your password reminder due to a problem related to your mail provider please contact us.

Why can I not enter any competitions?
Most of our competitions and giveaways are currently limited to residents of the United Kingdom or the United States. They are only displayed to members whose details state that they are residents of the UK. If you incorrectly entered your country name as the Vatican City, for example, you won't be able to view or enter them. You can enter the correct country by clicking "My Private Profile" within the members' area.

How do I send a letter to your panel of experts?
We employ a specialist team of freelance writers to answer reader queries, and the answers to a selection of these letters are published in the magazine each month. This service is expensive to provide so you will need to purchase a copy of the latest issue of the magazine and fill in the special form provided. We regret that we are unavailable to answer fishkeeping queries submitted via this website.

Why can't I login?
Stating the completely obvious, you need to register and provide the correct username and password. These are case sensitive, so "Fred" is not the same as "fred". If you've forgotten your password you can request a reminder.

First of all, you should try deleting your old cookies for our site by clicking here. After a couple of seconds you will be redirected to a login form and the fields should be empty so you can re-enter your details. If that does not work, please try the following:

If you're using Internet Explorer on Windows please follow these steps: Tools» Internet Options» Delete Cookies. Restart your browser and try logging in again. Do not use the password that Internet Explorer has stored in its memory. If you told IE to store the wrong password it will enter the wrong one in the password field and you won't be able to access the site.

If you're using Mozilla Firefox follow these steps: Tools» Options» Privacy» Cookies» View Cookies» Search». Then, enter practical in the search field and you should see two cookies in the results. Hold down CTRL then click each cookie, then hit Remove Cookies. Return to the site and you should be able to login.

Some users who recently upgraded to Internet Explorer 7.0 are reporting that they are unable to login. This appears to be caused by a bug or new security feature in Internet Explorer 7.0, as the login system is unchanged and works correctly in all other browsers. We are trying to determine a workaround for this problem for IE 7 users. For the time being, we advise all users to switch to Firefox instead. It's thoroughly tested on the site and is known to work correctly throughout.

If you are in the UK you'll benefit from entering your postcode when you register for access. With your postcode, our Fish Shop Finder can provide driving directions directly from your door to any of over 1100 tropical fish shops in the UK. We can also show you news and other content that is specifically tailored to the area in which you live. We won't send you junk mail. Can I get the magazine if I live outside the UK?
Yes, Practical Fishkeeping is available around the world at many specialist newsagents, or to order from your local newsagent. The easiest way to ensure you get the magazine is to take out an overseas subscription. You can purchase a subscription from the subscriptions page.

Why do I not receive the newsletter?
In order to receive a copy of our popular monthly newsletter you need to be a registered member of the site and you need to opt-in to receiving it. If you have done both of these and it still doesn't appear to be arriving, please check your junk mail folder. Some Internet Service Providers mistakenly interpret newsletters, including ours, as spam and it may not show up in your inbox.

You may need to add the sender email "emapao@processrequest.com" to your contacts list so it is not junked again. AOL/Supanet users who cannot receive mail sent from this website (because AOL/Supanet blocks it) should receive the newsletter as it is sent by a separate dedicated mail server and not from the website itself.
