Tsunami affecting fish availability

A number of UK-based fish importers are reporting availability problems with many varieties of tropical marine fish.

Practical Fishkeeping has spoken to several businesses who have found that the number of fish available has been severely limited by the effects of the recent tsunami.

Many suppliers in the Sri Lanka area in particular have lost their boats, homes, families or their lives to the tsunami and it may be some time before the trade recovers.

One marine fish export business in Sri Lanka has lost most of its team of highly-skilled fish collectors.

While marine fish are caught from other areas, those from south Asia are commonly imported so the shortage could see a decrease in the quantity and range of species available in the shops this year.
