New Austrofundulus phylogeny includes four new species


An international team of biologists have produced a molecular phylogeny for the rivulid killifish genus Austrofundulus which includes descriptions of four new species.

Tomas Hrbek, Donald Taphorn and Jamie Thomerson used 13 mitochondrial DNA genes to produce an evolutionary family tree called a phylogeny for the Austrofundulus genus.

The study shows that one killifish, A. myersi, which was previously believed to be a synonym of A. limnaeus, is in fact a distinct species in its own right.

The team described four new species: A. rupununi, leohoignei, guajira and leoni, and found out some interesting details about the genetics of different populations of both transilis and limnaeus.
