Police who chased a ‘suspicious’ car through south London were amazed to discover a goldfish swimming around in a pint glass inside the boot — despite the fact that the car had crashed!
A team of police cars followed the vehicle through Chessington after it drove past them at high speed. It crashed at a road nearby, at which point the driver and a passenger got out and fled the scene.
When police checked the car, they found the goldfish (christened Peter by officers at the scene). The glass in which he was swimming had been unsecured in the boot, and was incredibly still upright. Also in the car were a number of items believed to have been stolen in a burglary, during which a goldfish had also been taken.
Kingston Police spokesman Seb Ellis told the Evening Standard: ‘We discovered a goldfish, in a pint glass, just sitting there chilling and casually staring at us.
‘We couldn’t understand how even after the fast driving and the crash the glass was still upright!
‘Goodness knows what the fish was thinking after his tour around Chessington in a pint glass.’
Peter has since been reunited with his owners, where he is reported to be safe and well.
The driver of the car was later found and arrested.
