Default Three-second memory myth: Fish show they can remember things for up to five months

Heard this story on my way home from work on the radio tonight

Quote:
Their brain power is at best shallow. Or so we thought. But scientists believe fish may have hidden depths.

The creatures said to have a mere three-second memory span can actually recall information for up to five months.

Scientists found that fish trained to respond to certain sounds in captivity still reacted months later when they heard them in the wild.

meh mythbusters disproved the 3 second myth about goldfish years ago by training them to go round an 'obstacle' course and it worked they remembered it all. so its not really breaking news (well i dont think it is but seeing as most people havent seen mythbusters then it will be to some)

No lol in that, it's the truth!!! I love working nights the beauty of shifts.

x06jsp I think most people who keep fish would say the 3 sec memory is rubbish anyway, There has been many experiments in the past some good and some bad. However, the more research carried out in any area of fish keeping can only be a good thing in the long run for the welfare of any fish (if done correctly). The point of the article i found interesting was.

Quote:
Applied to fish farming, the technique would allow 'trained' fish to be released into the sea, where they would mature naturally until ready for the table. The cost of cages, staff and feeding would all be cut, as would the impact on the environment, an agricultural conference heard
The funny thing is I don't eat fish!

Very interesting this thread. The 'homing' fish is very interesting. haha!

Im going to bring back the 'budgies wont fly over water' myth. It sounds like a ledgable fictional fact.
