Our ad department sent out an email yesterday, which many of you will have received, and I received an interesting email from a lapsed reader. I've removed the reader's details but thought I'd share this here along with my response, just in case others may have stopped reading in the past for the same reasons.

Quote:

Hello. I've just completed your classified ads survey and it reminded me why I stopped subscribing to PFK. I started noticing that you were inserting 'un-labelled' advertising into editorial content - maybe I'm old-fashioned for a 26-year-old, but I can't be the only one who finds this highly unethical!! This type of unannounced product placement caused my trust in the magazine to plummet. When advertising and articles are mixed in this way, how can I trust anything PFK publishes? I will always question whether a money-making agenda is taking precedence over the presentation of accurate information.

The classified ads survey included questions about product reviews, which is unsurprising but still disappointing. I gather from this that you are looking to up your revenue by selling product reviews instead of presenting an honest opinion (if you're not already doing this)?

Anyway, I doubt anyone at the magazine will be concerned by my comments as long as income continues to increase, but it's worth keeping in mind that the further PFK moves toward becoming one huge ad, the more noticeable this will become to readers who haven't caught on yet.

My reply... I forgot to address the point about us "looking to up our revenue by selling product reviews", but obviously this is completely untrue, as explained a bit below.

Quote:

Many thanks for your email, which I have also copied to our advertising department. The ads you refer to are called "advertorials" or "advertising features" and, although I personally do not like them much, they are very popular with some of our more sophisticated advertisers who ultimately help fund the publication. However, they are *always* labeled clearly as such.

I'm not sure whether you've seen the magazine since we re-launched in September, but if you'd like to send me your postal address I'll put a free copy in the post to you so you can take a look. There's a regular advertising feature in the issue I'll send, but as you'll see it is marked accordingly.

I can honestly assure you that editorially we have very high standards and morals and are constantly at odds with advertisers and the advertising department for the hard line we take. Editorial and advertising are definitely separate things and we certainly cannot be bought and whether a company is a big advertiser will make no difference to the conclusions we draw in our reviews. Indeed, many of our reviews are actually now written by completely impartial reader-reviewers who have absolutely no ties to the magazine whatsoever, other than being keen forum members.

We frequently criticise products in our reviews, and if you look at all other aquarium magazines in the market you'll see that we are actually the only magazine, globally as far as I am aware, which does this. I think this in itself demonstrates that we are not swayed by advertising spend and that any review verdicts you read in PFK are a true reflection of the products' performance in our tests. Indeed, many companies are notable in their absence from PFK because they have been disgruntled at previous reviews we have published.

I wasn't aware that this email was being distributed, as it's come directly from our central advertising division (which is run separately to editorial) but I assume that any questions relating to reviews are designed to yield data that will help support the ad story when explaining to new companies how effective printed product reviews can be.

In terms of the number of ad pages in PFK, I think you may be surprised to see that we also have far fewer than our competitors' titles. The latest issue of our rival magazine Tropical Fish, for example, includes 56 pages in total of which 24 are ad pages - nearly 43% ads. This month's PFK includes 23 ads but 124 pages - just 18.% ads.

Anyway, I hope this helps explain our side of things. I can honestly assure you that all advertising features will always be marked as such and that we really do have massive editorial integrity and have never been bought by advertisers.

If you'd like to send me your postal address I'll glad send you a recent copy of the new-look magazine so you can judge for yourself.

Many thanks for your feedback.

Regards,
Matt

I was doing some tank maintenance today and I thought 'must make a note of the date and what maintenance was carried out' Then I thought I need a diary (I don't posses one) wouldn't it be nice if there was a fishkeepers diary. I've seen similar diaries pertaining to other hobbies so what do fellow forum member think of PFK designing one. It could be a simple smallish affair to give as free gift with a suitable issue say the December or Christmas issue (too late for this year obviously) or it could be a more elaborate
smart looking hardback affair for sale through the website or through the mag. There are all sorts of useful bits of info that could be spread about throughout it's pages along with pics etc. What do you think?

What might encourage you to pick up the mag if you saw it on the shelf?
What do you not like on covers?
Do you like black covers, white covers, or is it purely the fish that matters?

The H.Bleher - Definitive Guide:-part two

In the December 09 PFK, Issue 12 ,p66.

In the December 09 PFK, Issue 12 ,p66.

H.Blether again, was illuminating and instructive, sharing his deep knowledge of Wild Discus, and this second article was accompanied with some excellent pictorial illustrations of Discus fish in all their splendoured magnificence.

HB's articles and his Blether's Discus Book are in essence histrigraphy, for they exist as vivid explicit records of the fast changing Amazonian environs.

He is the recorder of the interrelationships, the complex social and cultural conditions of this most threatened environment, where the nature of individuals and communities, are with the current level of excessive human encroachment, are being, through pollution and the wasteful use and distruction of the precious resources, are now caught up in the accelerating processes of distroying all that makes the Amazonian region one of the world's natural wonders.

The article was especially instructive and useful in describing the genera and species which live with Discus in the wild.

Where as HB states, "defintely never mix wild Discus with tank bred Discus" and rightly focusing in upon the parasite toleration consequences, my years of Discus keeping, puts a question mark against his statement "that Pterophyllum scalare is an ideal mate for Discus".

Recognising fully that Angels and Discus live side by side in the Brazillian habitat, I do not believe that they make compatable companions within the aquarium habitat.

Why? Because Angel fish are the more aggressive within the closed environment of a fish tank, when it comes to feeding, this particularly becomes evident, they and the Discus feed in the same manner and therefore compete for food, the Angel fish are quicker in the dash for food and their aggressive stance inclinations, can intimidate the Discus.

In such competitive aqurium conditions, the Discus can shy away from eating their "fare" share.

Also Angel fish when breeding [egg laying in particular] they are territorially belligerent and in the confines of the aquarium could damage the Discus.

The Angel fish in relation to opportunistic parasites, constitutionally, are more capable of being able to tolerate parasites and may have built up a resistance and the potential risk is, that it can mortally impinge on the Discus population in the shared aquarium.

I know that many Fishkeepers do keep both species together, without any problems but for the well being of the Discus, it is safer to avoid trouble by keeping the two species separate, Why take the risk both in terms of nurturing the Discus and also in the economical sense, when as HB has shown that there is a wide variety of compatable fish which can live in peace and harmony juxtapostioned with Discus.

In HB's three examples of Discus biotopes, he, in the symphysodon one, indcates that a powerful filter with peat is important, yes it was when I first set out , the use of peat was a given, in those low tech days I tried many water conditioning methods, such as, the Geisler Peat "bomb", which used unfertilised white peat, I tried demmineralised water, I used extraction by distallation to produce a purified form using a distillation column, I tried a trickle filter system that included trays some of which in decending order, contained filter floss, gravel. sand and finally activated charcoal.

These were difficult techniques to get right and very time consuming methods that thankfully have been replaced by technological and scientific progress.

In relation to using the peat method, it is environmentally to be discouraged, as it causes more harm than can be offset by any perceived benefits and there are enough alternatives to ensure that the water parameters can be acclimatised to meet the needs of Discus, especislly so, when keeping farm bred Discus.

The information HB provides gives us a clear understanding of the environment, habitat and feeding life styles of the wild Discus species and in my early days of discus keeping this knowledge was essential to reach an understanding of how to keep these very expensive beautiful fish.

This archettypal intelligence ,we gleaned from distnguished Discus gurus such as Axelrod, Degen, Schmidt-Foche and Wattley et al and as the art and science of fishkeeping developed, so did our own experiences; this hinterland foundations became codified and further enhanced through information sources becoming readily available; the fishkeeping magazines were the corner stones that allowed us to share knowledge and knowhow and todays hobbyists now have immediiacy via the internet.

It is delightful that we have access to H. Blether's exploration world and can see and read about the historic settings of the wild Discus, but wild Discus is a minority section of the Discus keeping hobby, for the majority of Discus keepers buy farm bred Discus who needs require a modern regime suited to their specific needs,

I am extremely interested in the histrigraphy approach of HB and enjoyed the Discus articles and his associated explorations, for I am a traditionalist by age and outlook and I would like to see the PFK magazine
produce some further Discus articles from the perspective of keeping and nurturing farm bred Discus incorporating the current advances in aquarium sciences and technologies

Hi guys,

I would really like to see a freshwater pipefish article in the near future - I think they are amazing fish but not enough people know how to care for them properly and this unfortunately leads to many deaths.

I know swallows aquatics in Rayleigh stocks them (althought they are just labelled sp., no specific info is given), but I haven't seen them anywhere else for any length of time.

I'd be very grateful, and perhaps it could be linked with a biotope edition?

Just a though ;)

huff
