Hello Everybody,
I'm warren and have just decided to venture out into the unknown with a tropical aqaurium. I have previously owned a 72L coldwater aquarium housing a few comets and a small garden pond containing a few shabumpkins and goldfish. Unfortunately i appear to have made a few errors already. I opted for a fishless cycle for only one week and included bacterlife as a filter supplement (something i am now learning is not preferred). I have a 150L planted tank which now has 10 small neons. (I also realise this was a bit of a mistake and hold my wrists out for a wrapping). day 3 of neons started to fade in colour and swim in isolation. I was using tetramin flake butv realised it had reached its sell by iin aporil so switched to aquarian tropical fish flake. Day 5 colour has retuned and they're back as one. I am continuing to add the bacterlife daily. Any tips would be welcome, however the neons will have to stay put. Keeping tank at 25 C, with a 10 hour light cycle. Feeding twice a day. internal filter 1000L/H (sponge/ceramic and carbon) plus x2 hydor ario pump/lights. Thanks for reading guys and i really appreciate your input.

just thought i would introduce myself and high to all the fellow fish keepers

i keep comunity fish which i have been doing since i was a child
but this year i have ventured into the malawi chiclids which are at present in a 3ft tank (not for long) their new home is up and running and just waiting for the water conditions to be right

my question is i am moving them to a much bigger home ie 4x the size they are in now (got temped by this lovley tank lol ) now do i move the fish in there and add new fish later or do i put the new fish in with the old ones in the new tank so they all start on new ground together

ps how many fish am i going to need to have the best set up possible it is 5ft by 18 inches deep and 24 inches high

thanks and hi to all

Hi there my name's Lee,

I'm new to fishkeeping (aside from a stint as a kid) I've just invested in a small 48litre tank, I have added substrate(?) and a piece of bogwood along with some pebbles to the bottom - I am in the process of cycling(?) to build up the bacteria... I have a heater too - it's currently set to 25c

I am currently debating the new residents, from what I've read in PFK and a few books I should be looking at community fish - I quite like the neon & Penguin tetras and I'm also taken with the clouded(?) minnows featured in this months magazine - I would welcome some suggestions from some experts in this forum - I'm keen to keep a nice simple set up and I love the idea of small fish in a shoal, as well as some hardy plants for them to shelter in - if anyones got any tips or advice I'm all ears and would love to see some photos of your tanks and their residents!

I'm looking forward to getting a lot of pleasure from this new pasttime!

thanks

Lee

Just over a week ago got a second hand Rio 300 tank and had the brace bar break but got a new one from Juwel for free (great Service) but I also had some bars made from stainless steel all fitted now and fine .

Also bought a Eheim Pro 3 350 as I used to have an aquarium years ago and know how important filtration is. But with 2 filters going the water is quite turbulent so I removed the spray bar and just let the Ehiem return water hit the side of the glass and the internal filter return is also turned towards the glass.

Just introduced a few small fish after testing the water seems ok I have added some water conditioning as well.

Like to have a community set up so looking for shoaling fish and placid slightly larger(not big specimens though) any suggestions?

Hello!

I posted for some advice last night but I probably should've introdced myself here first!

I'm not new to fish keeping but I only recently found this site. It's great!

Anyway, we've been keeping fish on and off for years and our current tank is a 65l Aqua Start 500. I thought it was quite big but after lurking around on the forums for a while I'm starting to think it's a bit on the pokey side!

The inhabitants of my tank are: 5 zebra danios, 4 female guppies (we had a male - Zapp Bannigan - but he overdosed on romance and kicked the bucket a few months ago) 8 white cloud minnow and 4 teeny baby guppies in a little net hangin on the side ofthe tank.

My son has a Betta in his room in a heated 10l tank, his name is Sushi and he's a beautiful navy blue veil tail (the Betta, not my son - his name's Henry; he's scruffy and moody looking)

Other than that we have an 18 month old LakelandXBorder terrier (Albert) 3Xex-battery hens (Pecky, Meany and Baldy) and 2X5month old kittens - Mario and Daisy, 1XHusband, 2 sons and a daughter.

Sorry if my 'Hello' post is a bit long and rambling, I'll be more succinct when I'm chewing your ears off for advice in future!!

i am new, and would like introduce myself, i have kept for some 30 years on and off.tanks of all shapes and sizes. i started with cold water as i think most people probably do, and ventured upto tropical. I did have a dream to hold marine fish but got put off it really quickly as so much time and effort was needed.
For the last 7 years we ( my husband and myself ) have a 'Trigon 350' corner tank.
I myself have only been used to 4 - 6 foot tanks over the years, and for some time now i have been losing the interest in my fishkeeping cos the tank is far too big for me look after properly and i feel the need for flippers and a snorkel cos of its size :-) . we have both become very lazy in its upkeep and are now down to 2 fish. The problem we have is that we can not keep plants because of 'Big Boy' our 12 inch green severum whom we have had for 9 years, originally in the 6 foot tank before we bought the new one. We had two of them at first about an inch small, but as they got a bit older the one we have now which i think is a male was attacking the other, so i gave it to my friend, she lost him last year but Big Boy is still going strong, and what i want to do is to get my interest back in fishkeeping and bring my tank back to its former glory without Big Boy wrecking the plants in it. we do suffer from hair algae and we have bog wood and slate ornaments, and plastic plants but of course it would be so nice to have real plants for it to look nice but we just can't afford to keep replacing them. The only other fish we have is a plec. please can any one give me advise on how to get my fish interest back, as i am sure we only sell it and that will only make for regrets... look forward to any advise Thanks

Hi All

Been up and running about 3 months now and all going pretty well. Red Sea Max tank (though not the best looking tank in the world I like the way everything is hidden) with Maroon Clown (no I have not let the kids name it Nemo!), Regal Tang (again no Dory!), Yellow Tang, Scooter Blenny, and a couple of yellow tail damsels, Couple or red leg hermits, couple of Turbo snails and a couple of cleaner shrimps.

Weekly water checks are looking ok but had a bit of a Nitrate spike recently, weekly 10% water changes at the moment but will look to reduce frequency to fortnightly if the nitrate stays under control.

I will be looking to expand to a larger tank at some time in the future but budget at the moment dictates what I have.

Find the forum and staff at the LFS very helpful and in most cases not patronising, understanding that we all start out at some time and all have to learn the ropes.

Thanks for all the help I will probably need in the future

Hi all

Just thought I'd post about my first couple of weeks fishkeeping. I had a tropical tank about 15 years ago in my teens but didn't know half what I do from having read this fantastic forum for the last couple of weeks. I got a Juwel Rio 180 with an Eheim external filter from ebay and set it up a couple of weeks ago. Decided to cheat slightly with the cycling and got a bag of bacteria squeezed from the sump at my LFS to seed the filter. This gave me a slight Nitrate increase and then 4 days later I got 9 Zebra Danios after reading recommendations on here. I've been doing water tests twice a day which have always come back 0 Amm, 0 Nitrite and 5-10 Nitrate - so all looks good in the 5 days since I've had them. I lost one of the Danios yesterday but it had always been much smaller and never looked quite right, but on a positive note I had a pair spawn this morning so hopefully I'm doing something right!

Hi Everyone,
New to the forum but I have been gradually getting more and more obsessed with keeping fish for the past 3years. I started off with a 60 litre BiOrb and the old faithfull neon tetras, a plec and some glass catfish. That quickly turned into a Fluval Roma 240 with an aray of african cichlids and 2 frontosas which are my pride and joy. Plec is now living with them and the BiOrb is now used as the nursery tank as the cichlids tend to breed quite a bit! I am about to invest in a larger tank which the malawis will be moving into so the frontosa's can have some peace and quiet! I am having problems with alge in my Roma 240. The tank is not overcrowded and its not in direct sunlight. The cichlids do eat it and I dont mind a little bit but its growing rapidly. Any suggestions on how to get reduce it or what could be causing it?
